Castlebar councillors call for lifeguard service and beach control

Members of Castlebar Town Council have called on Mayo County Council to take control of the beaches in Mayo with regard to the provision of lifeguard services, toilet facilities and the drinking of alcohol by members of the public.

An Taisce ‘F grade’ planning report is ‘flawed’ according to Mayo County Council

Mayo County Council has hit back at a report launched by An Taisce this week, which ranked Mayo as the fifth worst local authority in regard to planning decisions. Mayo County Council have also called for An Taisce’s position to be reviewed following the report’s publication, stating that “The report is a further indication of the urgent need to have the privileged position which An Taisce has enjoyed in the planning system reviewed as a matter of urgency.”

Durcan’s motion on tender process deemed ‘superfluous’

A motion by Independent councillor Frank Durcan was deemed to be “superfluous” by the council executive at the January meeting of Mayo County Council. Cllr Durcan’s motion called for the procurement officer to attend a council meeting to explain his modus operandi for dealing with tenders.

Student grant applications on course to continue upward trend

With the Leaving Cert results having come out this week the attention of last year’s secondary school graduation classes will move towards college places next week when the CAO offers come out. Since the economic downturn in recent years Mayo County Council has seen an upturn in the number of students applying to the local authority for the third level grant and that looks set to continue this year.

Mayo VEC row finally coming to a conclusion

The ongoing row between Fine Gael and the other elected members of Mayo County Council in relation to the filling of vacancies on Mayo VEC may finally be coming to a conclusion. The issue raised its head once again at the April meeting of the local authority on Monday, when Sinn Féin councillor Gerry Murray said he had “no option but to withdraw from the meeting” after he was not allowed to read the text of the legislation in relation to the appointment of people to the VEC following the resignation of a member.

More salt supplies for Mayo County Council

A motion has been issued by Fine Gael councillor Patsy O’Brien calling for more transparency on decisions made by strategic policy committees. Cllr O’Brien’s motion called for all decisions made at SPC level to be made an agenda item at the main council meeting each month.

Mayo Co Co and Castlebar TC pay tributes to late Sean Smyth

Both Castlebar Town Council and Mayo County Council paid tribute to the late Sean Smyth at their monthly meetings last week. Mr Smyth, who passed away recently, was a former Town Clerk of Castlebar Urban District Council from 1961 to 1968 as it was called at the time, and latterly the CEO of the Mayo County Enterprise Board from it’s inception in 1968 until his retirement in 1993.

Lunatics have taken over the asylum - Flynn

Westport based Fine Gael councillor Peter Flynn has hit out at the industrial action being taken by the members of the public service unions in Mayo County Council in their dispute over pay cuts saying, “The lunatics have taken over the asylum”.
